On a Trip with CBD

CBD has taken over the world of medicine and wellness – there are a plethora of consumers that have shown interest in learning about what CBD has to offer along with its many positive benefits. It is one of the most researched and used elements for mental and physical health despite a lack of regulations.

It’s believed that Cleopatra, Egypt’s original beauty queen, used naturally derived cannabis oil to keep her skin looking beautiful for Mark Antony and Julius Caesar. The global CBD skincare market is expected to reach USD 1.7 billion by 2025. The general public’s awareness has led to creating many different products infused with CBD. The UK now spends more on cannabis extracts than vitamin C and B combined. Personal care companies provide various CBD products including oils, teas, perfumes, skincare products, consumables and even pet care.

What is CBD?

CBD is the non-intoxicating element of marijuana or hemp plants. It’s an extracted powder and is typically mixed with an oil like olive, hemp or coconut which tends to improve its effectiveness.  It’s completely legal using CBD in skincare because it doesn’t contain mind altering properties of marijuana’s tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content which is removed from the stalks and stems of the hemp plant. And, thanks to an ever-growing body of research of CBD’s power to slow the signs of skin ageing (due to its strong hydrating and antioxidant properties) it is now making waves within beauty – and in particular skincare. Who doesn’t want to look five years younger?!

The difference between Hemp, THC and CBD?

CBD is sourced from hemp stalks and stems. The plant is full of cannabinoids and contains minimal levels of THC. CBD aids to restore overall balance in the body along with other benefits. CBD can be sourced from both marijuana and hemp plants.

THC is short for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, another compound found in cannabis. Although THC does have anti-inflammatory properties that are known to be beneficial in topical skin care. Hemp seeds are the seed portion of a cannabis plant. The oil is created by pressing the seeds. Like other seed oils including sunflower seed and jojoba oil, hemp seed is high in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids.

CBD’s benefits

Where skin benefits are concerned, CBD is a powerful factor for soothing, calming, and comforting skin. As an anti-acne cure, CBD’s anti-inflammatory powers help to reduce swelling and redness on the surface of skin. It also brings balance to skin oil levels and sebum production, which helps to control breakouts. As with other plant-based ingredients, CBD is packed with antioxidants, which are essential for reducing the appearance of wrinkles, dull skin tone and roughness. This is where it helps with anti-ageing.

On the wellness front, there have been numerous benefits that CBD might be just what you need to calm nervousness, stress and reduce anxiety. Insomnia Statistics UK 2021, found that 36% of UK adults have trouble falling asleep at least once every week. However, CBD offers sleep relief. A 2019 study titled, Cannabidiol in Anxiety and Sleep: A Large Case Series, found that sleep scores improved within the first month for two out of every three participants.

Brands Launching into CBD

CBD possesses anti-inflammatory activity, which could affect exercise-induced inflammation and related pain which is why many athletes chose to use it. High-profile celebrity endorsements, such CBD brand Love Hemp and two-time Heavyweight Champion of the World and Olympic gold medallist, Anthony Joshua OBE, are no doubt using this for anti-inflammatory purposes.

Global companies are entering the market daily with appealing products. John Lewis entered the CBD space in late 2020, offering a wide range of products from sleep drops to hard-working face creams and serums. Revolution Beauty has its own CBD skincare range of tonics serums and facial oils. The affordably priced collection even includes a spectrum of products to cater to different needs. Celebs like Kristen Bell have launched CBD brands like Happy Dance – with ultra-relaxing personal products – it’s become a popular brand in the market.
