Inside Canada's Beauty Market

As an international beauty and wellness consultancy, we work with clients from different regions of the world including from Canada, to develop and build their brands. If you are looking for support with developing a brand, with rebranding or with market expansion, Get in Touch today, to discuss how we can support you.

According to Circana in 2023 the Canadian beauty market grew 18% from January to September and it is estimated to be worth $11 billion CAD ($8 billion USD). The beauty and personal care industry in Canada includes cosmetics, skincare, haircare, fragrances, and other personal hygiene products. It is a dynamic and growing sector, driven by changing consumer preferences, increasing awareness of personal care, and the rise of eco-consciousness. Despite being the second-largest country in the world, Canada has a small population of approximately 40 million inhabitants, that said, it is also amongst the countries with the largest proportion of GDP, with a high average wealth per adult.

Factors influencing Canadian’s buying behaviour

  • Consumers are seeking personalised beauty solutions, often facilitated by digital tools like virtual try-ons, skin analysis apps, and customized product recommendations.
  • Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube play a major role in shaping beauty trends and driving purchases.
  • Influencers, especially those focused on skincare routines, makeup tutorials, and beauty hacks, have a significant impact on consumer purchasing decisions.

Sephora dominates the Canadian beauty landscape as the largest beauty retailer and the most-visited cosmetics website in the country. Twenty-five percent of Sephora’s top volume sales doors are in Canada. With a strong multichannel strategy, Sephora has mastered success in Canada, operating more than 100 stores nationwide alongside a robust online presence. Shoppers Drug Mart, called Pharmaprix in Quebec, has more than 1300 stores across the country, and carries a mix of drugstore and high-end brands. Hudson’s Bay has 86 stores, and luxury department store Holt Renfrew, has seven stores.

Unlike the US market, much of the population is concentrated in a handful of major cities, which means online shopping is a necessity.   Amazon Canada, part of the global Amazon network, provides Canadians with access to a wide variety of beauty products from numerous brands and sellers. Rather than being based in a single location, Amazon operates extensive distribution centres across Canada to ensure fast and efficient deliveries. Launching a brand in Canada is not without challenges. Higher taxes, stricter employment laws and a more rural landscape mean Canada comes with a new set of challenges. Brands launching in Quebec also need to factor in that all documentation needs to be translated into French.
